Charging other Media Devices from your BRAVEN Speaker

The BRAVEN 855s speaker’s internal battery is designed to charge USB devices that draw from 0.3A - 2A using the full sized USB port, including most tablets and cell phones. To use external charging:

  1. Turn the BRAVEN on.
  2. Plug the USB power cable that came with your phone, tablet, mp3 player, or other mobile device into the USB port on the BRAVEN speaker.
  3. Plug the other end of the cable into your mobile device, and it will immediately begin charging.

To protect the BRAVEN’s internal battery, the ability to charge external devices is deactivated when the BRAVEN’s own battery level is low. If your mobile device does not begin charging when it is plugged into the BRAVEN speaker, please charge the BRAVEN speaker first. It is recommended that you charge your BRAVEN until the power indication light turns off (4 to 6 hours for a full charge) before using it to charge external devices. You may continue to listen to music while the BRAVEN is being charged.

When the battery level hits a critical low level, the BRAVEN 855s will make a beep and continue to charge external devices and play music for another 5 minutes, after which time the BRAVEN will turn itself off.

Water Resistant Feature

The 855s is IPX3 Water Resistant, which means that BRAVEN 855s speakers are not intended to be submerged in water, but are resistant to light rainfall and light water splashing.

IMPORTANT - To ensure your BRAVEN 855s speaker is prepared for use in a wet environment, remove all cable connections and tightly close the side water cap. If the water cap is not properly closed, the BRAVEN 855s will not be water resistant.

BRAVEN 850 and 850 speakers include an option to enjoy your music utilizing DTS Audio’s SRS WOW HD™ unique technology. SRS WOW HD™ improves the dynamic audio performance of compressed and uncompressed audio by expanding the size of the audio image and creating a deep, rich bass response. The patented techniques in SRS WOW HD™ widen the horizontal sound field and raise the vertical sound image, retrieving information lost in the mixing process to create a more natural audio experience.

To activate DTS’s SRS WOW HD™, simultaneously press the volume up “+” and volume down “-” buttons for two seconds while music is playing. Press the same buttons again for two seconds to deactivate DTS’s SRS WOW HD™.

Two BRAVEN 850 and/or 855s units can be paired together for left and right stereo using a technology from CSR called “True-Wireless.” True-Wireless allows two speakers to be connected wirelessly up to 10 meters apart, with one speaker playing the right channel of the song and the other playing the left channel for a true “stereo” effect. True-Wireless technology requires a proper setup sequence in the order to function properly.

True-Wireless on the BRAVEN 850 and/or 855s is set up by following these instructions precisely:

  1. Before starting, disable all other Bluetooth devices on the phones connection menu. If the phone is actively connected to another Bluetooth device, the phone will not be able to handle the bandwidth needs of true wireless and the sound will distort.
  2. Turn on the speaker by pressing and holding the power button for 2 seconds.
  3. Start the pairing sequence by pressing and holding the Battery check button 4 seconds until you hear an audible “sonar” sound on the first device. True-Wireless pairing mode can be identified by looking at the 5 LEDs on the side on the speaker. All five LEDs will light sequentially in a “side-to-side” pattern. Repeat this for the second device.
  4. The devices should take up to 1 minute to establish a connection. Once a connection is made there will be a beep indicating that the connection is successful. If the two speakers are connected together in a True-Wireless pair, but have not yet been paired to a Bluetooth source, the left-most LED will blink twice in quick succession on both speakers.
  5. Pair your phone with either speaker by pressing and holding the play button on one of the speakers until you hear an audible cue. For initial pairing to the phone it does not matter which speaker’s play button is pressed and held. Speaker-to-phone pairing mode can be identified by looking at the 5 LEDs on the side of the speaker. The 5 LEDs will flash in an “inside to outside” sequence continuously.
  6. Enter the Bluetooth menu on your device and select the “BRAVEN 850” or the “BRAVEN 855s” and connect. After several seconds the speaker will beep, indicating that the connection has been established. The speaker on which the connection was initiated from (the one originally placed in pairing mode on step 5) is now the “primary” speaker in the True-Wireless pair. The Primary speaker (right channel) can be identified by looking at the left-most LED. This LED will blink once every 5s. The Secondary (left channel) speaker’s left-most LED will blink two times in quick succession every 5s.
  7. The True-Wireless speaker system is now ready to play true left/right stereo.

When you turn off either of the 850/855s speakers while connected in True Wireless, both speakers will turn off. To regain True Wireless, press the Power Button on both 850/855s speakers within 10 seconds of each other, then wait approximately 15 seconds. The 850/855s speakers will automatically reconnect to each other and to the previously connected Phone/ Tablet. You will hear two beeps indicating True Wireless is reestablished.

IMPORTANT True Wireless Note: True Wireless technology only supports one active Bluetooth connection to your phone/tablet at the same time. If any other Bluetooth device (other than the paired 850/855s speakers) is simultaneously connected to your phone/tablet, the BRAVEN 850/855s audio will distort. If distortion occurs, power down all other Bluetooth devices in range of your phone/tablet, other than the BRAVEN 850/855s. Refresh the Bluetooth connections on your phone/tablet by turning Bluetooth off and then back on. True Wireless is now reestablished.

BRAVEN will not turn on

Your battery may be depleted. Connect to a working AC outlet to charge (see the Charging your BRAVEN section of this manual, found under "Getting Started"). Recharge your BRAVEN for 4 to 6 hours, or until the charging light turns off.

Paired Bluetooth device will not connect

  1. Turn the BRAVEN off and back on
  2. Remove the BRAVEN from the pairing list of your Bluetooth device (refer to the device’s owner’s manual for support). Then pair the device and your BRAVEN again following the instructions in section 3: Bluetooth pairing.

BRAVEN and the device indicate a connection, but there is no audio

  1. Make sure your BRAVEN has the volume turned up.
  2. Make sure your Bluetooth device is playing audio, and the volume is turned up on the device.
  3. On some devices, such as computers, you must select the BRAVEN speaker from the Bluetooth menu and choose “Use as Audio Device (stereo)” in order for it to play.
  4. Typically, pairing with a specific device remains intact when the BRAVEN speaker and/or the Bluetooth device is powered off or is taken out of Bluetooth range (up to 33 feet). The BRAVEN speaker will automatically try to reestablish the connection when powered back on or brought back into range. If the connection is not reestablished, turn the BRAVEN speaker off, turn Bluetooth off on the Bluetooth device, and repeat the pairing procedure. See the "Bluetooth Pairing" section of this manual, found under "Getting Started" for additional details.

My device went out of sync with my BRAVEN

If your Bluetooth device has lost sync with your BRAVEN, you can reestablish the connection by either of the following methods, depending on your cell phone/tablet (or other Bluetooth device settings):

  • On your cell phone/tablet or other Bluetooth device, select the BRAVEN device in the Bluetooth settings
  • Turn the BRAVEN off and then on again

You can switch between your currently connected device to a previously connected device by using the Bluetooth “connect” interface on your phone, tablet, or computer’s control screen. Some devices will need to be re-paired with the BRAVEN (See the "Bluetooth Pairing" section of this manual, found under "Getting Started"). Many devices will automatically pair with the most recently added Bluetooth device. By reinitiating a connection, your device will take priority.

The BRAVEN speaker can be actively connected to several devices simultaneously, but is only able to play audio from one source at a time. If you can’t hear your audio on the BRAVEN speaker, it may be because another device has an active connection to the BRAVEN at that time. To establish priority for the Bluetooth device you wish to use, pause the audio on the second device or remove the BRAVEN from that device’s Bluetooth connection list.

Note: When two devices are simultaneously connected to your BRAVEN, and both are within the Bluetooth range (10 meters or 33 feet), the audio signal may skip or cut out when switching back and forth between the two devices. To solve this, disconnect the BRAVEN from one of the Bluetooth devices or move one of the devices out of the Bluetooth signal range. See the troubleshooting topic “The BRAVEN is ‘skipping’ or audio is cutting out momentarily” below for further details.

If you are consistently having trouble connecting a new Bluetooth device to your BRAVEN speaker, it may be helpful to remove the connection history for all Bluetooth devices that have previously connected to your BRAVEN. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Turn your BRAVEN speaker off.
  2. Press and hold the volume down button.
  3. While holding the volume down button, turn the speaker back on and continue to hold the volume down button.
  4. Continue to hold the volume down button until your hear the BRAVEN start up sound a second time. Your speaker is now reset.

Volume is too low

  1. Check the volume levels on both the device that is playing the audio as well as the volume on the BRAVEN. Ensure that the volume levels on both devices are turned up sufficiently.
Note: The volume controls for line-in mode are separate from the volume controls for Bluetooth mode, and can be adjusted on both the playing device as well as on the BRAVEN speaker.
  2. If using the 3.5mm cable, also check that the cable is fully inserted into both your device and the BRAVEN speaker.
  3. Some Bluetooth devices experience volume loss when connected to speakers through Bluetooth. Please refer to your device’s owner’s manual for further information.

The BRAVEN is "skipping" or audio is cutting out momentarily

A Bluetooth signal can be affected by objects that obstruct the BRAVEN from a clear path to the playing device to which it is paired. Ensure that your listening environment is conducive to the 33-foot (10-meter) Bluetooth range between your BRAVEN and your playing device. Bluetooth connection ranges may be decreased due to nearby electric power lines, magnetic fields, or other factors.

When there are two devices connected to the BRAVEN at the same time, and both are within the 33 foot (10 meter) Bluetooth range, one Bluetooth device may try to take control of the connection from the other. This may cause your BRAVEN’s audio signal to skip or cut out. If this occurs, you may consider disconnecting all but the device you wish to use at that time.

If you are not connected to multiple Bluetooth devices simultaneously, and the BRAVEN audio signal cuts out or skips consistently within a short period of time, it may be helpful to disconnect and then reestablish the Bluetooth connection. Do this by removing the BRAVEN from the list of Bluetooth devices on your mobile playing device, and then re-pairing to the BRAVEN by following the steps in section 3: Bluetooth pairing.

If you are consistently having trouble with skipping, it may be helpful to remove the connection history for all Bluetooth devices that have previously connected to your BRAVEN. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Turn your BRAVEN speaker off.
  2. Press and hold the volume down button.
  3. While holding the volume down button, turn the speaker back on and continue to hold the volume down button
  4. Continue to hold the volume down button until your hear the BRAVEN start up sound a second time. Your speaker is now reset.
  5. Test a new connection by pairing with your BRAVEN.

The speakerphone feature of the BRAVEN speaker isn't working properly

If you answer a phone call over the BRAVEN speaker when connected to the speaker via the 3.5mm cable (line-in), you will be able to hear the caller through the BRAVEN speaker, but the caller will hear you through the microphone on your phone instead of through the microphone on the BRAVEN speaker. The 3.5mm “auxiliary” port is designed to send the left and right audio channel signals to the BRAVEN Speaker, but not the microphone signal. When connected to your BRAVEN speaker via Bluetooth, both the left and right audio signals and the microphone signal are transferred to the BRAVEN speaker.

If you have a True Wireless connection established, only the primary speaker will serve as speakerphone. You will only be able to answer/end calls from the Primary speaker, and only the Primary speaker will have an active microphone.

MY BRAVEN speaker isn't charging my cell phone when I plug it into the BRAVEN's USB port

  1. Make sure that the 3.5mm cable is not plugged into the BRAVEN speaker or into your playing device.
  2. Make sure that the BRAVEN speaker is adequately charged.
  3. Turn off the BRAVEN speaker and turn it back on again to reset the internal electronic settings.
  4. Discontinuing music play can provide extra charge time to external devices when the BRAVEN’s internal battery is low.

See the "Charging other media devices from your BRAVEN speaker," section of this manual, found under "Getting Started" for more information regarding the charging of external devices from your BRAVEN speaker.

Unless the BRAVEN speaker is designed to be water resistant, do not expose the BRAVEN to rain or moisture. The BRAVEN should not be exposed to dripping or splashing, and objects filled with liquids, such as vases, should not be placed on or near it. Do not use near bathtubs, washbowls, kitchen sinks, laundry tubs, in a wet basement, near a swimming pool, or anywhere else that water is present. As with any electronic products, use care not to spill liquids into any part of the product. Liquids can cause a failure and/or a fire hazard.

The power supply must be used indoors only. It is neither designed nor tested for charging outdoors, in recreation vehicles, or on boats. Make no modifications to the product or accessories. Unauthorized alterations may compromise safety, regulatory compliance, and system performance, and will void the warranty. Do not place any flame sources, such as lighted candles, on or near the BRAVEN.

The BRAVEN contains small parts that may be a choking hazard and is not suitable for children under age 3. Before use, fully charge the battery using the supplied power adapter. Do not continue charging the battery if it does not reach full charge within the specified charging time. Overcharging may cause the battery to become hot, rupture, or ignite. If you see any heat deformation or leakage, properly dispose of the battery. Do not attempt to charge the battery in temperatures outside the range of 32°-104°F (0°-40°C). If the battery begins to leak, do not allow the liquid to come in contact with your skin or eyes. If contact has been made, wash the affected area with plenty of water and seek medical attention immediately. Do not expose the product or battery to excessive heat, including direct sunlight or fire and storage or use inside cars in hot weather, where it can be exposed to temperatures in excess of 115°F (60°C). Doing so may cause the battery and power supply to generate heat, rupture, or ignite. Using the product in this manner also may result in a loss of performance and a shortened life expectancy. Extended exposure to direct sunlight may damage the external appearance and material qualities. Do not step on, throw, or drop batteries or the power supply or device, or expose them to a strong shock. Do not pierce, crush, dent, or deform the batteries or power supply in any way. If either becomes deformed, properly dispose of it. Do not short-circuit batteries.

Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way: such as power supply cord or plug is damaged; liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the BRAVEN; the BRAVEN has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped. Do not attempt to service the BRAVEN yourself. Opening or removing covers may expose you to dangerous voltages or other hazards and will void the manufacturer’s warranty. To prevent risk of fire or electric shock, avoid overloading wall outlets, extension cords, or integral convenience receptacles.

Do not place your BRAVEN on high surfaces such as shelves. During music playback the BRAVEN may vibrate and move which could cause the speaker to shift and fall off of the edge.

Your Bluetooth device (mobile phone, music player, tablet, laptop, etc.) must support the A2DP Bluetooth profile in order to work wirelessly with your new BRAVEN SIX Series speaker. The A2DP profile is supported by most recent mobile products with built-in Bluetooth capability. Please refer to your device’s user manual for details and instruction regarding the Bluetooth profiles it supports.
